Here at FRC we’re all about supporting parents during the ups & downs of family life. During our programs we hear parents share a variety of helpful ideas and resources they have discovered as part of their journey and we thought others might benefit from a little peer to peer sharing.
“Our life is so hectic with 4 kids, and I thought I would never find time for me (self-care), until another mom shared her tip with me. I’m the taxi of the family & pick my kids up from school & activities every day so instead of staring at my phone while I wait, I draw. I keep a little artist notebook and some colored pencils in a cute little bag that stays in my car. Now I do something I love and it relaxes me. Brilliant right!”
“One thing we started last year and have kept doing is prepping lunches and snacks that our kids can get for themselves. We usually buy the favorites, crackers, some cheese, fruit & veggies, yogurt (big tub, not the little expensive ones), and a few sweet treats. Then we make the lunches and the snacks for the week and put them in the refrigerator on a designated shelf. Oh, and we found a bunch of small fun reusable snack containers at Walmart.”
“My 7-year-old son has ADHD and ASD. A good resource that I share repeatedly is The Autism Community in Action or TACA website: https://tacanow.org/ They have an autism workbook and a ton of other resources. The workbook does cost, but they have scholarships available.”
“My mom passed a few years ago, but I remember her always telling my sister to sleep when her baby sleeps. She’d say the housework can wait, sleep. Now with our baby that’s what I do—I nap when she naps.”
*Of course, Central Oregon has a host of local resources including ours that can be found on our website, on our community calendar, and across social media.
